The linen stitch is great with a variegated wool because you really enjoy the colour changes as you alternate stitching and slipping. It's great seeing the difference between the two sides.  Only problem is the density of the stitch. The lady serving on the wool counter, of this haberdashery, has worked there for 37 years.  I feel saddened that just as I am rediscovering knitting, this shop should be closing. I've determined that garter or stocking stitch requires 29 of my knitting or purling stitches.  I initially tried 49 stitches for the mitered square and had to unpick them all as the square was coming out, after quite a bit of knitting, as 6". This Friday I finished a Rowan Jake jumper for ds (which knit up quickly in (beginner's yarn!) in 12 days) so now I'm twiddling my thumbs (!)  As a stop gap I've found some wool(*) at a big Woolworths near here and have started to try out stitches in 3" squares.
