Stitches that I've had the most fun with so far are the Linen Stitch (8th April) and the Drop Stitch Square (12th April). The linen stitch is great with a variegated wool because you really enjoy the colour changes as you alternate stitching and slipping. The Drop stitch is fun because you get to drop stitches and unravel them - which gives a perverse pleasure.

I enjoyed knitting the Linen stitch - especially with the variegated yarn as I could see where I was in the pattern because the colours alternated on the needle. It's great seeing the difference between the two sides. Only problem is the density of the stitch. Our squares are to be 7" square so calculating the number of stitches required for each stitch pattern is required. I've determined that garter or stocking stitch requires 29 of my knitting or purling stitches. I knit this last night. It is alternating a few rows of garter stitch with a few rows of stocking stitch - very stretchy! It shows the variegated wool effects with the standard stitches.....

The wool still ain't here so I've taken to surfing. I'm amazed by how many people knit socks - although I can see that they are in some beautiful wools. I've also taken a shine to some blog gizmos so, forgive me as this is my first blog, I'll be adding probably too many of them to this page. Well I'm enjoying myself, although still on tenterhooks (!) about the wool.

I'm really not sure about knitting with variegated wool - for which most stitch patterns will be lost in the stripes. I have seen mitered squares recommended - so this will be one of my options. The wool could come any day now because I ordered it a week last Friday (16th March). This Friday I finished a Rowan Jake jumper for ds (which knit up quickly in (beginner's yarn!) in 12 days) so now I'm twiddling my thumbs (!) As a stop gap I've found some wool(*) at a big Woolworths near here and have started to try out stitches in 3" squares. So far I have 6 baby blue and 2 lilac ones.
